OFF-ROAD RACERS READY FOR HIGH-FLYIN’ ACTION
IF the World Rally Cars aren’t spectacular enough, Coates Hire Rally Australia 2015 will offer fans even bigger jumps and dirt-spraying slides in the Australian Off Road Championship.
The Coffs Coast 400 will be Round 4 of the Australian Off Road Championship and will be staged on the rally weekend on a separate loop-course just north of Coffs Harbour.
The Coffs Coast 400 is part of the rally festival, but an event in its own right because the cars and race format are significantly different.
While rally cars run on made roads on a series of Special Stages of varying lengths, the off-roaders will tackle multiple laps over two days on a single 50km course over punishing bush tracks. The course will feature forestry roads, fire trails and open paddock sections in an area only 18km drive north-west of Coffs Harbour.
Two spectator points at the start and midway through the course will be close to amenities, including phone and internet coverage.
The cars, so-called “buggy” open- wheelers and highly-modified production pick-ups or off-road wagons, are built for extreme performance. Long-travel suspension allows them to tackle high speed obstacles that would stop an ordinary road car, plough through sand mud like they don’t exist and take huge leaps off crests.
Loud, big-horsepower V8s and turbocharged V6s power these spectacular cars. On suitable roads, top speeds can approach 200kmh.
The Australian Off Road Championship (AORC) commenced in 1981 and showcases the best off road competitors, cars and events from around the country.
AORC events are defined as long course events that are conducted on a track of no less than 15 kilometres in length. The courses and tracks used for the AORC are often narrow, twisting, tree lined tracks, undulating farmland tracks, mountain tracks and river crossings, sometimes incorporating man made jumps and other obstacles.
Off Roading is an exciting and adrenalin filled discipline of motor sport and is growing in stature with an increasing competitors looking to take up the challenge.
